Parenting

The Higher Education Act, as amended, requires JAMU to make appropriate arrangements for the study of parents and persons who have taken custody of a child in lieu of parental care for the duration of maternity or parental leave.

For the sake of simplicity, it is further assumed that in the JAMU environment it is mainly parents’ studies. In the case of a student who has taken custody of a child, the procedure is analogous.

Definition of the recognised period of parenthood

Recognised Parental Leave (UDR) means the period of time during which the learner would have taken maternity or parental leave under section 195-198 of the Labour Code.

The UDR consists of the duration of maternity leave (MD), parental leave (PD) or a combination of the two.

Maternity leave is payable exclusively to the mother of the child in connection with the birth and care of the newborn child for 28 weeks. It shall normally commence at the beginning of the 6th week before the expected date of childbirth, but not earlier than 8 weeks before that date.

Parental leave is granted to the mother after the end of her maternity leave and to the child’s father from the child’s birth until the child reaches the age of three.

Student rights in the UDR era

Learners with recognised parenting time have the right to:

  • to deduct the UDR from the total period of study for the purpose of calculating fees,
  • an extension of the deadlines for fulfilling study obligations, unless they interrupt their studies,
  • to interrupt their studies for the duration of the UDR, even repeatedly,
  • for early enrolment in studies before the expiry of the interruption period.

The Dean of the Faculty will always grant a request for interruption of studies in connection with pregnancy, childbirth or parenthood.

Evidence of UDR

The UDR is registered in the JAMU Information System on the basis of the student’s notification and documentation of relevant documents. The learner is obliged to immediately report changes that affect the registration of UDR.

In matters relating to UDR, students should contact the study department of their faculty.
